A reading corner in Steinsel has been created to make waiting times easier and more enjoyable for children visiting the new Ketterthill centre.
The initiative was inspired by a simple question asked by Santiago LOPEZ ROJO, a nurse at the centre: “How can we make waiting easier for children?”
Every day, he supports patients for whom a blood test or medical examination can be a source of anxiety. For children, this feeling of apprehension can often be even stronger.
However, this reflection does not stem solely from his professional experience. As the father of four-and-a-half-year-old twins, Santiago understands the importance of creating an environment that is reassuring, welcoming and child-friendly. A place where children feel expected, listened to and at ease.
From this combination of professional and personal experience came the idea of a free reading corner at the Steinsel centre.
Open to everyone, this small library allows children to discover a story while they wait, encourages families to exchange books, and gives everyone the opportunity to contribute to keeping the initiative alive.
Beyond promoting reading, the project fully reflects the values embraced by Ketterthill:
📖 Supporting children’s well-being by offering an alternative to screens while they wait.
♻️ Encouraging sharing and sustainability by giving books a second life.
🤝 Strengthening social connections between patients, families and the centre’s teams.
More than just a bookshelf, this reading corner is a space for discovery, sharing and connection. It is a collective project made possible through the commitment of our teams and the generosity of the first contributors who helped fill the shelves.
The first books have now found their place in Steinsel, and the shelves are gradually filling up. We are looking forward to seeing the first stories being read, the first discoveries being made, and the first favourite books chosen by our young visitors.
