Practical information – cross-border workers

Find out how to get tested in Luxembourg as a cross-border worker.

If you are a cross-border worker, you do not need to request prior authorization to have a blood test or any other sample taken in the Grand Duchy

To receive the same benefits as a resident, all you need to do is :
  • be affiliated with the National Health Fund (CNS)
  • have a medical prescription* issued by your doctor, who practices in Luxembourg, France, Belgium, or Germany.
Validity of prescriptions in Luxembourg
  • 2 months for a single prescription, with no end date specified
  • 6 months if an end date is specified, for a single or renewable prescription
Do I have to pay the costs up front ?

The services provided are covered by the CNS (except for tests not included in the list).

Everything you need to know about submitting results

The test results are sent directly to your doctor, regardless of the country in which they practice.

A digital copy can also be sent to you upon request. In this case, you will be notified by text message when your results are available. This text message contains an activation code that allows you to view your results on our results server.

For most routine tests, we guarantee same-day results after 3 p.m. if the tests were performed in the morning.

Some tests may take longer, such as bacteriological cultures, allergy tests, and certain serology tests. You will be informed of the turnaround time for your results when your sample is taken

Did you know that your co-insured persons can also come to Luxembourg for their examinations ?

Coinsurance allows family members (spouse, partner, or children) to be covered free of charge by the health insurance of a primary insured person, upon request to the CNS and in accordance with the rules of the country of residence.
Coinsurance for one or more family members is never automatic. A request must be submitted to the CNS Coinsurance Department. In some cases, the CNS requires a specific document. The coinsured person can benefit from health insurance coverage as a family member of a primary insured person. Coinsurance is free of charge.

Practical tips for coinsurance

Contact the CNS at the following number (+352) 27 571

to inform them of the request for affiliation of one or more members of your family (child(ren) and/or spouse or partner) as co-insured persons. You will need to explain your family situation and indicate your country of residence. They will then be able to provide you with information and tell you what steps to take.

The health insurance provider in your place of residence will send a certificate to the CNS.

The CNS will then be able to proceed with the affiliation as soon as it has received all the necessary documents.

Based on the information provided by the CNS

You will need to contact the health insurance provider in your country of residence to inform them which member(s) of your family you wish to co-insure with the CNS.

If you are already affiliated with the CNS and your situation changes (marriage, civil partnership, birth)

don’t forget to inform the health insurance fund in your country of residence, which will forward the necessary information and forms to the CNS.
